What is Occupational Therapy?
In Occupational Therapy, the term "occupation" doesn’t just mean employment —it refers to activities that we do in our daily lives and gives our lives meaning. These include the things we do to take care of ourselves, connect with others, and participate in home, school, and community life. It’s about what makes us who we are and how we engage with the world around us. We can support with:
Fine Motor Skills- the use of the hands and fingers, e.g., handwriting, buttons, zips, cutlery skills.
Gross Motor Skills- the use of our body’s large muscles to perform everyday movements and physical tasks, e.g., balance, strength, coordination, endurance.
Play and Social Skills- turn taking, sharing, interacting with peers.
Sensory Processing- how our brain receives, organises and responds to sensory input.
Emotional Regulation- identifying and responding to our emotions and strategies to support.
Cognitive Skills- planning, organising, problem solving, attention and sequencing.
Self-Care- dressing, toileting, mealtimes, grooming.
Home and Community Participation- shopping, cooking, accessing the community, utilising public transport.
